Welcome to the weekend edition of Walking with Memphis. Weekend…that’s something that is a favorite in our home. We love having weekends to spend together, weekends to clean (not sure that’s really one of our favorite things, but), weekends to take road trips or weekends to sleep in.
Some of our favorites:
CBS Sunday Morning. In the hustle and bustle of the day, sometimes watching the news can be very unsettling. For us, Sunday Morning brings us some peace, the news stories sometimes bring me tears because they are so inspirational, and sometimes they bring us a little bit of laughter.
There’s nothing like a cup or two of coffee with the one you love and Sunday Morning.
Coffee. We love coffee. I am a fan of cold brew and flavored coffee while Sam prefers plain coffee (black coffee–I attribute this to his time in the military). We bought a new coffee pot and it is perfect. Currently our favorite jam is Archer Farms Mocha Chocolate.
Music. While this is something we may not always agree on, we love listening to music. For me, it can help me work (I know, sounds crazy, right?). I will listen to Brandi Carlile, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Harry Connick, Jr., The Avett Brothers, I could list so many…and then there’s Sam. Jazz, techno, alternative (see genres here), and even death metal, screaming, screeching, unintelligible lyrics…at least that is what it seems like to me. I’m not a huge fan of that genre, and Sam knows that. We can agree to disagree on music.
Ice Cream. Yesterday was a long work day. I had so much to do and feel that I still have so much to do. I worked on getting my course materials on an online platform, and had zero motivation to do so. I suggested ice cream, and after an hour or so, Sam stepped out, returned with ice cream. He’s a keeper, that one. We have ice cream dates and those evenings are the best. We recommend hitting up local places like Shayki’s (West Frankfort) and Tibbey Creamery (Murphysboro).
Family Time. We love spending time with our kids. The school year has just started and we haven’t quite figured out our daily schedule and weekly routine. We hope to take a few road trips in throughout the school year, and we hope to have some fun nights of family movie nights, pizza nights, and evenings relaxing at home. We love hearing about their school days, and we love laughing. Sometimes after a long day we love cuddling on the couch and just chatting or watching a movie together.
One of Sam’s favorite things to do is woodworking. He loves to create. Just last week he made a few shelves for me in a very short amount of time. He was so excited to visit one of his favorite stores, Lowe’s, and grab all of the materials he needed. And then viola! Shelves! He feels calm, creative, and relaxed when he is in the garage working with various projects.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some mornings that are my absolute favorite because they are quiet, there’s no one waking up or running late, it is a peaceful silence. I know one day that sound, that morning moment will not be one of my favorite things because I will miss not being able to have someone to wake up, take to school, pick up from practice, drop off at a friend’s house, and these little moments are some of my absolute favorite things.
Don’t take the favorites, the small moments, the little things for granted. One day you’ll blink and they will be gone.
These kids are my favorites. Remembering them when they were small and even moments that were just a few years, weeks, and months ago. Favorite memories, captured in pictures…and in my heart.
