I will admit, I have enjoyed having a snow day (now two). That might seem funny since I’m also a parent who has children enjoying another day off school as well.
For some, the snow days may make you cringe, stress, or worry about what you will do about your work schedule because you may not get a snow day as an adult. You long for the school to be open and the temperatures to rise. You love your kids, but after a holiday, you may want them back in school…
Maybe you work from home and having your kids at home is a little rough. Maybe your significant other is home and that disrupts the flow of your day—doing whatever it is you do at home when everyone else is at school or work.
For me, I have enjoyed having kids home and my husband (who had a day off as well). We’ve had some extra family time that that has been really nice. I’ve had more coffee throughout the day than I normally would, and we’ve extended our watching of the TV series “The Office” in the evenings. We’ve cooked together, and we even ventured out together over the weekend (“Jumanji” isn’t as bad as I thought it would be).
Snow days sometimes leave me with a little bit of alone time to think or work. Today I feel like I’ve been able to catch up on some “stuff” like laundry and cleaning, but I’ve also had some time to read and enjoy the quietness of the house. I’m half tempted to make snow ice cream, but it is also really cold outside. I’m not about that life right now.
When I was younger, I remember going sledding with my cousin up and down my grandparent’s hill. Bundled up until I could barely move, it was so fun having a snow day. I don’t know if I would enjoy sledding as an adult or want to be out in the six-degree weather. Right now, I know I have responsibilities that come with adulting, but I also want to read a book for fun, empty the hampers of dirty laundry, and clean up my house. I may even have a snack for lunch, heck, it is a snow day after all.
If you feel like the winter months give you time to hide out and also provide a little more downtime, I’m right there with you. Sometimes it is really good to take it slow, organize yourself, catch up on some of your shows, work on your favorite hobby, have an extra cup of coffee (or hot tea), and maybe wish you can do this year round…
Now back to that mountain of laundry…
