Vacation Hangover

August 8, 2017 by Cathrine Hoekstra

Vacation was great—but the “after” is something of a struggle. Do you ever go on vacation and then feel that you need a vacation to recover from vacation? Our week out West wasn’t jammed pack with activities every hour on the hour, but after driving what seemed like 24 hours straight through Kansas, I feel like I have vacation hangover–and we’ve been home since Sunday.

How do you combat “vacation hangover?”

  1. Plan your next trip. As crazy as it sounds, we talked about our next trip! Now that we have an RV, we are ready to some more exploring and take the camper out. We’ve discovered the communities within KOAs, and even thought about finding some more along our next route. Any suggestions for another vacation are welcome (just no mountains to drive through, please).
  2. Recreate your favorite meal from your vacation. One of the best meals we had was from the Colorado Mountain Brewery. The food was amazing (some of the best fish and chips, just saying). It might be hard to get the recipes just right from this place, but a meal similar to what you’ve had on vacation can help with that vacay hangover (or vacay blues).
  3. Frame your favorite memories! We took a lot of pictures (and shared some on social media), but I have a few that are “framers.” Now we just need to get them printed and up on the wall! It is nice to have some photos from your journeys, and I’m thinking we might need a little photo wall in our living room that capture some of these memories.
  4. RELAX. Boy is this a hard one. As soon as we got home from our trip I wanted to unpack all the things and do all the laundry. Does anyone else do that? Some of our things we left in our camper, which was nice, but we still had a few loads of dirty laundry and some items to put away. I felt better after doing that—but I still did the unpacking and cleaning after we got home. I also recommend taking a trip when you can literally shut off technology, or not worry about it—like in the evenings—I graded. Summer school was wrapping up while we were on vacation and I still had work to do.

I am moving slow this week, and I’m pretty sure that Sam is too. I need time to relax–but since we returned on a Sunday, it was back to work yesterday. I admit–I was glad for the vacation–but I was glad to be back to the normal routine of the work week. Just a few days “off” (let’s be real, they won’t be days off) before school starts. Prepare for sappy posts about how my kids are growing up too fast and how I’m in denial we have a freshman and 4th grader.
