There are many “appreciation months” throughout the year, days that are commemorated for holidays, special recognition, and even Star Wars (yes, I know that today is May 4—so “May the 4th Be with You”).
One month of recognition that I am proud of is the month of the Military Caregiver.
Something I recently learned about is Hidden Heroes–through the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. This is a major part of the foundation as it brings to light the stories of military caregivers–and their stories. If you know me, you know that I enjoy hearing about military experiences from others–and you know that I am “big” on the narrative or experience. This organization helps give these amazing caregivers a voice and inspiration for others.
Being a military spouse or caregiver can be challenging–there may be many obstacles in addition to little to no support. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation created Hidden Heroes as a means for military caregivers to get the support they need and register their name in a national registry that will provide access to resources and support.
I recently added my name to the national registry.
What I love about Hidden Heroes is the Caregiver Community. The HHCC (Hidden Heroes Caregiver Community) is an online support group offering positive support and a place for military caregivers of all eras to connect with one another. A simple conversation, text message, even coffee date (if you are able to connect with someone locally) could mean the world to a military caregiver. A welcoming environment, the HHCC is also a place to share stories, seek advice, and discuss challenges faced as a military spouse, caregiver, or veteran.
It is sometimes rare to hear/see a veteran ask for help, let alone their caregiver. Military caregivers (and families) need our support. At times, it can be hard to balance life–being a parent, working a full-time or part-time job, activities with kids, travel, bills, rain (can we just all agree that it is time for this rain to end?)…you get the picture. Support is necessary for survival.
There are people, communities, people with stories like you out there. Trust me, I’ve found some wonderful people I can share experiences with…and they make all the difference in the world. My life is better because of these women. It is nice to make a connection with people who have a story similar to yours—and it is good for your own self-care and well-being–to know you are not alone.
Incase you were wondering about other days that honor, remember, and commemorate our military here are a few coming up:
May 12-Spouse Appreciation Day
Typically the Friday before Mother’s Day, this is a day to honor all military spouses.
May 20-Armed Forces Day
Usually on the 3rd Saturday in May every year, this day honors the branches of the military.
May 29-Memorial Day
A day of remembrance of our veterans who have died in service.
