The Love of a Dog

February 14, 2018 by Cathrine Hoekstra

There is nothing truer than the love of a dog. I see it every single day. Some would think it would be absolutely annoying to have a dog by your side every day but to be honest, I have trouble picturing life before Memphis for Sam.

I know it was a struggle. Every.single.day. He would struggle to wake up, struggle with work, and the entire day could be filled with triggers, flashbacks, and unpleasant thoughts. No one wants to live like that. Depression. Anxiety. Fear of going out in public. Fear of failure. His mind was going non-stop.

I considered myself a dog person. I grew up around hunting dogs, my grandparent’s faithful dog Snoopy, my uncle’s dogs, and we had numerous friends who were “dog people.” But, it wasn’t until I was in my 30s when I became a dog mom to a Cavalier King Charles, Archie.

When I met Sam, he had a small dog, Kip. He was so little, so cute (and he shed like crazy). I immediately became good buddies with Kip. Then Kip met Archie…and well, they got along really well.

We have three dogs in our home. If you ever visit, you will more than likely end up with a little dog hair on your clothes. You will also get introduced to the many toys, Peppermint, Uncle Sam’s hat, and a few antlers here and there. And, if you are lucky, Memphis might come love on you (or try to sit with you).

Dogs are simply amazing. The unconditional love they have for us is unbelievable. Every single day, all of our dogs are happy to see us, they love getting a treat here and there, but they are genuinely happy to see us walk through the door. They love sitting on our laps, they love going on road trips (Kip loves the farm, Archie just likes car rides).

At first, it was hard to see the small dogs peer from their “dog apartments” when Sam would leave with Memphis. I think they were sad they didn’t get to go. But, they are all brothers. They get along, and they love to play (it took some time, and still does, but we are getting there). I think it is love.

Our house is never lonely because we have our furry kids. All three of our dogs know how to love us, and they love us no matter what. I absolutely know that our dogs know we love them. While Memphis probably senses Sam’s emotions and feelings the most, all of the dogs watch his every move in the mornings. They all eat the same type of dog food. They love it when he comes in with Memphis after a day at work.

Life is just better with a dog. Just ask Sam. His life has turned around since Memphis has come into his life. There is love between them. Sure, they may have their moments, but at the end of the day, love wins.

Love always wins.
